Humanist Book Discussion – Good Without God, Part V

The Humanist Society of Iowa, in conjunction with the UUHumanists, would like to invite you all to join us on Sunday June 17th as we conclude our series of engaging discussions centered on the book Good Without God by Greg Epstein, a provocative text that explores the meaning of living a morally and ethically sound life absent the finger-wagging of a supernatural parent-figure.

With this session, the discussion will run from 11 AM until Noon. And will still take place in room 103.

Tom Harvey will be leading the discussion. The reading assignment for this session is Chapter 6, obviously. Don’t be discouraged from attending if you haven’t finished the reading, as there is still room for you to participate. You will undoubtedly learn a lot about how people focus on what qualities nonbelievers DO share without having to rely on the guidance of a higher being – positive belief in tolerance, community, morality, and a sense of goodness.

The book itself is available, both new and used, from Amazon. If you haven’t had time to acquire a copy, you can read more about it here – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6362097-good-without-god.

We hope to see you there. For more information, please contact Gwen Harvey (kayakniowa@gmail.com) or Bob Henderson (rnhende@gmail.com).

Critical Bible Study with Randy Henderson-Session 3

Back by popular demand, IAF founding member and past President Randy Henderson presents Critical Bible Study. The keyword is “critical” as in revealing the misrepresentations, inconsistencies and contradictions of the Christian Bible in its many forms. The final and third session in this series will continue with the topic of the role of women in the bible. Randy has a wealth of information on this subject and is particularly relevant in the #MeToo climate of today.

Feel free to bring a bible (yes, many of us still have one!) and food and covered drink is allowed in the Millie Knee room.

About Randy Henderson: Randy studied three years for ministry in a conservative Bible College called Manhattan Christian College in Manhattan, Kansas. He finished undergrad studies at Dana College in Blair, Neb. with degrees in Social Sciences and Religion. In the ’70’s he pastored a church that he helped found in Council Bluffs that was a non-denominational congregation that was Charismatic/Pentecostal. Masters degree in Psychology, Counseling with School Counseling endorsement from U. of Neb. Thirty years atheist and agnostic with the American Atheists, formerly as Iowa state AA director and Freedom from Religion Foundation member.

Capital City Pride-IAF Booth

Please come out and help the IAF set up and run our informational booth at the 40th Annual Capital City Pride!

We will need volunteers to work from 10:30am to 4:00pm. Duties will include set up, tear down, and talking to curious members of the public. During the Parade (starting at noon) we just need a couple people to watch over our booth. PLEASE do RSVP, and if possible, indicate what time you’re available. The official hours for Pride this year on Sunday, June 10 are from 12pm-4pm.

Capital City Pride Parade 2018

Join the IAF as we continue our proud tradition of participating in the Capital City Pride Parade. This marks the 40th anniversary of Pride in Des Moines and we’re proud to support the LGBTQ community! Let us know by RSVP if you will be participating so we can plan our theme/displays/signs accordingly.

Staging begins in the Lucas Building parking lot at 11am. Capital City Pride asks that we do not park our personal vehicles in that lot as it takes up critical space for parade staging and line up. There is ample parking nearby.

Parade

 Starts promptly at 12pm. Parade route is completely down Grand Ave from the Lucas Building staging area to E 2nd

 DO NOT bring or use glitter or confetti in the parade. This is difficult to cleanup in which the city
imposes a substantial fee.

 If you are bringing candy or trinkets to give out to the parade goers, please do not throw the
items at them. Please walk up to them and hand out your item. We do not want anyone to
suffer any injuries.

 Weather: if it is cloudy, rain, the parade will go on as scheduled—keep an eye on the forecasts.
If there is lightning or storms, the parade will be canceled for everyone’s safety.

Creatively Secular [UPDATED]

NOTICE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, this Creatively Secular meeting has been brought forward to run concurrent with IAF’s Sunday Meetup.

Have you ever written an essay or lengthy blog post illustrating a particular point of view…? Do you like poetry…? Have you ever thought you might be able to draw but have never taken the time to cultivate that skill…? When confronted by a lump of clay, do you see potential new shapes rather than a clump of mud…? Have you ever looked at a can of Campbell’s soup and wondered just what in the hell Andy Warhol was thinking…?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then there’s a good chance you have a creative side to your being and we would like to invite you to join our emerging group of creative minds this Sunday for an afternoon of discussion and exploration on ways that Secularists in Iowa can utilize our creative gifts to foster a better sense of our wider Community and a greater awareness of our people for those within and without Iowa’s varied Non-Believer tribes.

The philosophy behind Creatively Secular is simple – Communities are made of people, and the better people understand one another the stronger communities become. As a means to this end, our threads of discussion will lead to topics as varied as Podcasting, Newsletters, Art Fairs, Community Theatre, Improv Comedy, Musical Collaboration, Q&A at Meetings and Events, Creativity Workshops and a host of other avenues that can be used to achieve our aims.
