By popular demand, IAF founding member and past President Randy Henderson presents Critical Bible Study! The keyword is “critical” as in revealing the misrepresentations, inconsistencies and contradictions of the Christian Bible in its many forms.
The next topic will be “Jesus: Fact, Fiction and Myth.” While the historicity of Jesus is being questioned, we are going to study the four gospels as the primary source material. In September we will survey the gospels of Mark and Matthew to see what is really there. So if you wish read Mark and Matthew and note any questions, comments, issues and we will discuss them. In October we will survey the gospels of Luke/Acts and John.
Feel free to bring a bible (yes, many of us still have one!) and food and covered drink is allowed in the Millie Knee room.
About Randy Henderson: Randy studied three years for ministry in a conservative Bible College called Manhattan Christian College in Manhattan, Kansas. He finished undergrad studies at Dana College in Blair, Neb. with degrees in Social Sciences and Religion. In the ’70’s he pastored a church that he helped found in Council Bluffs that was a non-denominational congregation that was Charismatic/Pentecostal. Masters degree in Psychology, Counseling with School Counseling endorsement from U. of Neb. Thirty years atheist and agnostic with the American Atheists, formerly as Iowa state AA director and Freedom from Religion Foundation member.

The Humanist Society of Iowa, in conjunction with the UUHumanists, would like to invite you all to join us on Sunday August 5th as we continue our series of engaging discussions centered on the book The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt, an involved text that explores the dynamic behind why people are so divided by politics and religion.
With this session, the discussion will run from 11 AM until Noon. And will still take place in room 103.
The reading assignment for this session is Chapter 4. Don’t be discouraged from attending if you haven’t finished the reading, as there is still room for you to participate. You will undoubtedly learn a lot about how people become so rigid in their thinking that no amount of rational inquiry will change their perspectives.
The book itself is available, both new and used, from Amazon, starting under $5. If you need help acquiring a copy of the book free of shipping, Humanist Society President Gwen Harvey can help with that. Please contact her at this email – firstname.lastname@example.org
If you like, you can read more about the book here – http://righteousmind.com/

The Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers welcome Jim Helton, National Field Organizer for American Atheists, as he gives a presentation on “The Future of Atheist Activism”. We will look at and redefine what is an atheist issue, how we identify these issues and what we can do about it. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the new initiatives from the American Atheists and how they can help here in Iowa! Jim is knowledgeable and enthusiastic and this will certainly be a fun and informative evening!
For those unaware, the Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers are a proud Partner/Affiliate of the American Atheists. In fact, we were awarded 2014 Affiliate of the Year for our political activism and at that point we were just getting warmed up! We continued with our political activism right up until the 2016 Iowa Caucuses and have recently partnered with other Iowa secular groups for events such as ‘Reason on the Hill” at the Iowa Statehouse.
After the presentation at the library those that wish to continue the discussion further may join us at a nearby bar & grill for food and drink. (Location to be announced.)
About our speaker: Jim G. Helton is the National Field Organizer for American Atheists. After attending the 2012 Reason Rally, he co-founded the Tri-State Freethinkers and was appointed American Atheists’ Kentucky State Director. Under his leadership, Tri-State Freethinkers adopted the highway in front of the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter and led a protest that received international attention. He played a key role in eliminating Gideon’s bible distributions in public schools and removing abstinence-only sex education.
Mr. Helton’s activism at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter landed him appearances in the 2017 documentary film Bill Nye: Science Guy and the forthcoming documentary We Believe in Dinosaurs. He has been quoted in countless news outlets, including The New York Times, Miami Herald, and Washington Post. He is a fixture in local media and has given interviews for international television specials in France, Switzerland, and elsewhere.
As National Field Organizer, Mr. Helton works with affiliates, local partners, and state directors to challenge religious privilege and fight to protect church/state separation at the local level by building coalitions around specific issue campaigns, including medically accurate sex education, LGBT non-discrimination ordinances, and religious exemptions.
