Make signs for our IAF July 18 protest

Want to carry your own brightly-colored custom sign at the protest, or make one for someone else to carry? Bring dollar store poster paper and any other decorations to our sign-making party. The theme is Atheists Reclaiming Religious Liberty. I would love to see some kids make “Secular Voter in 2026” signs, for example. We will have a staple gun, wide clear tape, glitter glue, wide markers, colored pencils to share. Note: Black and white signs are available for use on July 18; you do not have to make your own. But you can join us for fun and creativity on Thursday

Protest of Bob Vander Plaats Family Leadership Summit

We will be protesting Bob Vander Plaats “Family Leadership Summit” on Saturday July 18th in Ames. The following people will be speaking at Stephens Auditorium:

Gary Bauer, Dr. Ben Carson, Senator Ted Cruz, Governor Mike Huckabee, Governor Bobby Jindal, Tony Perkins, Senator Marco Rubio, Governor Rick Perry, Senator Rick Santorum, Donald Trump, Governor Scott Walker, Bob Vander Plaats

We demonstrated against this event last year and had the opportunity to speak to reporters from across the country. This is an excellent opportunity to let people know that not all Iowans support people like Ted Cruz and Rick Santorum.

IAF Book Discussion Group – Session 4

The IAF Book Discussion Group has been formed in an effort to continue the long tradition we have within the organization of interesting and stimulating conversations on topics relevant to the Secular movement.

For this session Richard will lead our continuing discussion of ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’ by Daniel Kahneman.

The reading assignment for this session will cover Part 3 (chapters 19 to 24) and some of Part 4 (chapters 25 to 27). Be prepared, if possible, to present one or two things from the reading assignment that stood out for you so that we can gain good cross-section of individual perspectives where the reading is concerned.

Here is a description of the book from MacMillan Publishers –

In the international bestseller, ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’, Daniel Kahneman, the renowned psychologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, takes us on a ground-breaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation–each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgements and decisions.

Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives–and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble.

The conference room that has been reserved at Kirkendall Public Library has a maximum capacity of 20 so RSVP early to get a seat. We’ll see you there. 🙂
