Twenty percent of the people living in Polk County are food insufficient. Many of the same people are homeless, living outside in tents and worse. Come join IAF members at the Thursday evening food preparation for the Urban Bike Food Ministry. Anyone and everyone is welcome and they do not preach, proselytize, or try to convert.
This group of volunteers meets every Thursday at 5:00pm to prepare 600 burritos, 150 peanut butter and jam sandwiches, and 80 turkey and cheese sandwiches to hand out to the homeless individuals in the Des Moines area. When the temps are above 40 degrees the meals are delivered on bicycles. In the winter months cars are utilized.
Not only is food delivered, but hats, coats, gloves, hand warmers, batteries, and blankets. The receiver, if they are a “regular”, often times give the volunteers hugs!
The plan is to make this a monthly volunteer event on the fourth Thursday of every month as part of our Community Service pillar of the ACES initiative.
If you have items you would like to donate add a comment below and arrangements can be made to pick them up or you can drop them off at the church. With temps predicted to be well below 0 this Friday the need will be great!
