Humanist Book Discussion – Good Without God, Part III

The Humanist Society of Iowa, in conjunction with the UUHumanists, would like to invite you all to join us this Sunday as we continue our series of engaging discussions centered on the book Good Without God by Greg Epstein, a provocative text that explores the meaning of living a morally and ethically sound life absent the finger-wagging of a supernatural parent-figure.

As with previous sessions, the discussion will run from 10 AM to 11 AM and take place in room 103.

The reading assignment for this session is Chapter 4. Don’t be discouraged from attending if you haven’t finished the reading, as there is still room for you to participate. You will undoubtedly learn a lot about how people focus on what qualities nonbelievers DO share without having to rely on the guidance of a higher being – positive belief in tolerance, community, morality, and a sense of goodness.

The book itself is available, both new and used, from Amazon. If you haven’t had time to acquire a copy, you can read more about it here – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6362097-good-without-god.

We hope to see you there. For more information, please contact Gwen Harvey (kayakniowa@gmail.com) or Bob Henderson.

Creatively Secular

Have you ever written an essay or lengthy blog post illustrating a particular point of view…? Do you like poetry…? Have you ever thought you might be able to draw but have never taken the time to cultivate that skill…? When confronted by a lump of clay, do you see potential new shapes rather than a clump of mud…? Have you ever looked at a can of Campbell’s soup and wondered just what in the hell Andy Warhol was thinking…?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then there’s a good chance you have a creative side to your being and we would like to invite you to join our emerging group of creative minds this Sunday for an afternoon of discussion and exploration on ways that Secularists in Iowa can utilize our creative gifts to foster a better sense of our wider Community and a greater awareness of our people for those within and without Iowa’s varied Non-Believer tribes.

The philosophy behind Creatively Secular is simple – Communities are made of people, and the better people understand one another the stronger communities become. As a means to this end, our threads of discussion will lead to topics as varied as Podcasting, Newsletters, Art Fairs, Community Theatre, Improv Comedy, Musical Collaboration, Q&A at Meetings and Events, Creativity Workshops and a host of other avenues that can be used to achieve our aims.

So please join us this Sunday from 2:30 to 5 PM at the West Des Moines Public Library. We will be congregating in the Community Room just opposite the inside book return where the vending machines live. If you would like to bring a snack to share with other participants, please feel free to do so, otherwise the vending machines can supply all your needs…unlike God… 😉

Humanist Book Discussion – Good Without God, Part II

The Humanist Society of Iowa, in conjunction with the UUHumanists, would like to invite you all to join us this Sunday as we continue our series of engaging discussions centered on the book Good Without God by Greg Epstein, a provocative text that explores the meaning of living a morally and ethically sound life absent the finger-wagging of a supernatural parent-figure.

As previous, the discussion will run from 10 AM to 11 AM and take place in room 103. Subsequent meetings will take place on the first and third Sundays of the month until the book is finished.

The reading assignment for Sunday is Chapters 2 and 3. Even if you haven’t finished the reading, there is still room for you to participate as evidenced by our lively discussion on the 8th. And you will undoubtedly learn a lot about how people focus on what qualities nonbelievers DO share without having to rely on the guidance of a higher being – positive belief in tolerance, community, morality, and a sense of goodness.

Just a reminder, participants from the discussion on the 8th were asked to consider drawing up a list of things they DO believe and bring said list along to use in the upcoming discussion.

The book itself is available, both new and used, from Amazon. If you haven’t had time to acquire a copy, you can read more about it here – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6362097-good-without-god.

We hope to see you there. For more information, please contact Gwen Harvey (kayakniowa@gmail.com).

Humanist Book Discussion – Good Without God

The Humanist Society of Iowa, in conjunction with the UUHumanists, would like to invite you all to join us this Sunday for the first in a series of engaging discussions centered on the book Good Without God by Greg Epstein, a provocative text that explores the meaning of living a morally and ethically sound life absent the finger-wagging of a supernatural parent-figure. This first discussion will run from 10 AM to 11 AM and take place in room 103, as opposed to to Room 105, to allow for more space. Our next meeting will take place on the 15th and then subsequent meetings will be held on the first and third Sundays of the month until the book is finished.
