This is our regular weekly Meetup. Please come and join us for an interesting discussion on a variety of topics! We are returning to Sam & Louie’s which is now under new management.
This Sunday we will have guest speaker Joe Laslo of the Urban Bicycle Food Ministry tell us about their work. Some of our IAF members have already been volunteering towards this effort in helping the homeless as part of our Community Service outreach.
There are approximately 300-500 people homeless and food insecure in Des Moines any given night. After a bad bicycle accident, Joe Laslo decided to minister to the homeless in Des Moines. He started Urban Bicycle Food Ministry on March 14, 2015 and since then he and his team of volunteers have served 31,200 burritos and 7800 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches a year. In addition to the food, Joe and his team dispense needed items such as coats, hats, gloves, blankets and sleeping bags. When the temps are above 40 degrees deliveries are made on bikes, but when Iowa’s temps fall below 40 degrees deliveries are made with cars. Serving hospitality 1 burrito at a time, is the motto the UBFM has adopted!
