Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers, Inc. (IAF) is a non-profit social and educational group dedicated to supporting local atheists, freethinkers, secular humanists, agnostics, and other non-religious people.

We share our non-religious view of the world with the community by participating in various local events, such as Capital City Pridefest and Des Moines Downtown Farmers' Market.  Each May, IAF holds its own National Day of Reason celebration as a part of a national movement instituted as an alternative to the National Day of Prayer. As we are always looking for new ways to express our ideas, our first bus campaign is currently underway in Des Moines.

In addition to educating the public, we strive to be more educated on religious issues ourselves. Our group gathers regularly for Critical Bible Studies where we explore the religious texts and analyze them in historic, social, and philosophical context.

Being non-religious often means feeling isolated. IAF provides its members an opportunity to meet like-minded people, socialize, network, make friends, discuss ideas, and have fun. In addition to IAF's regular weekly meetings, we periodically get together for movie nights, bike rides, dining out, picnics, and more.

IAF also recognizes that being non-religious does not mean being less kind or caring, and our members enjoy finding opportunities to serve the community.  This spring, we came together for the second time to volunteer at the Planned Parenthood Book Sale. A number of IAF members will volunteer at the Red Cross' station at the Iowa State Fair this summer, and more events are always being discussed.

IAF is a member-driven organization, so we invite our members to bring their ideas and get involved. Our general membership is free and open to everybody. As a member, you are welcome to attend any of IAF's weekly meetings and special events.

There are a few options for people wishing to become contributing members. There is an annual membership rate of $25 for individuals, there is an individual lifetime membership rate of $600, and there is a lifetime membership rate for committed couples of $900. The contributing membership level confers privileges such as being eligible to run for board or office, the right to vote in elections, and grants access to the organization's resources such as our lending library.

You can also make a donation to IAF in general or towards a specific project you are interested in. IAF is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization; therefore, all donations are tax-deductible.
